I am up to my elbows in Christmas crafts and decorations! And it sure is fun . . . most of the time. Especially when things go according to plan. Not so much when they don’t. I saw a really pretty winter scene candle holder in Lowe’s last week when I went to pick up some paint. It was only around $15 – not bad for a huge, glass candle holder. But still. I knew I could make one similar and I had just the glass vase to use so it would cost me nothing. I like the price of nothing over $15.

First take a look at the candle holder that Lowe’s was selling:

I like it because it can be used after Christmas, too. If I didn’t already have a glass vase similar to this candle holder and a way to cut white vinyl (hello Silhouette®), I probably would have bought it. But since I did. . . .

. . . here’s what I did. I gathered my supplies:

glass vase
measuring tape
vinyl
cutting file

First I measured the circumference of my glass vase so I’d know what size my design needed to be to fit.

When you first open that cut file, it looks like above. I ungrouped and then lined up the trees and regrouped them together.

Next, I rotated the design 90 degrees. Then cut!

Here’s where things got a little messed up. I was trying to use a new-to-me vinyl product that I picked up at JoAnn Fabrics. It’s from the Recollection line. It’s a type of glitter vinyl. There’s just one problem. It is EXTREMELY thin and I didn’t think I’d be able to cut it without a cutting mat. So I cut my shape in half to fit. The problem with that was that the seam was too visible for my eye.

The second problem was that my transfer tape would not stick to the glitter vinyl so I had to attach it by hand to the glass. This caused bubbles and creases. No bueno. That’s when I decided to start over with regular old white adhesive vinyl. I was able to cut the design in one piece.

Much better.

I don’t have a candle big enough, so I improvised with a string of battery-operated lights.

I love how it looks, especially at night.

The Dollar Tree has cylinder shaped vases that would work perfectly for this project with one of those little battery-operated tea lights. That’s a cute gift idea!
