Did you know that when hot chocolate originated in the 17th century it was a luxury item available only to the European nobility? I wonder if they had hot cocoa bars??? Somehow I doubt it. And even if they did, I bet there weren’t any candy canes or peppermint bark candies on them ?

Who doesn’t love hot chocolate? And do we all associate hot chocolate with the first snowfall? I think that’s when traditionally my mom would make hot chocolate when I was a kid. My brothers, sisters, and I would be bundled up and sledding in the backyard. When it was time to come in, we’d all warm up with a cup of hot cocoa!
As a teenager, I remember taking along thermos bottles full of hot cocoa when groups of would venture out for toboggan rides. These days, I’ll watch from the window thankyouverymuch! Sipping hot chocolate!
When I started thinking about putting together a hot cocoa bar, the first thing I knew I wanted was to use my salvaged wood chalkboard as the backdrop. I found some pretty chalkboard designs online but ultimately ended up using this one (SVG file here) as my inspiration.
I am not an artist or even very good at hand-lettering (though I do practice!) I did manage to decently draw my interpretation of the design. Not bad for an amateur!
Not perfect but I like it!
I propped up the chalkboard on the sewing cabinet that is in the small hallway that runs from the entrance hall into the kitchen. It’s a small space but is perfect, out-of-way place for all things hot cocoa!
Then I started having fun! I got out some pretty dishes and got busy filling them with candy canes and peppermint sticks. I even made homemade marshmallows!
If you haven’t tried making homemade marshmallows you’ve got to try it! You’ll never buy bagged marshmallows again! This is the recipe I followed.
Who remembers those soft peppermint balls? I found these at WalMart. Along with a few bottle brushes that look adorable.
Spoons, cups, and pretty festive napkins were added.
I’m telling you . . . those marshmallows are the bomb!

I have my mom’s family recipe for marshmallows so I know they are heaven to eat. I wasn’t sure that you could use them on cocoa, now I will try it. Everything is so pretty and appealing.
