If you are here for the first time, hi I’m Jeanie. Since I recently became an empty-nester I now have the time to write and share about my passions: creating pretty things, wood-working DIYs, home improvements, and home decorating. Welcome to Create & Babble.

gold one room challenge

I am joining in on the One Room Challenge™ for the second time. Last October I tried to makeover my craft room while I was in the midst of planning a wedding. That was not a good idea! Hopefully this project will go much smoother.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the One Room Challenge (ORC) is a blogging event hosted by Linda, from Calling it Home. Every Spring and Fall, a group of bloggers come together to completely make over one room. Throughout the six week period, each participant posts a weekly progress update with photos, accomplishments and obstacles faced. On the last day of the ORC, each participant posts a full reveal of the finished room with lots of beautiful photos.

We post our progress updates every Thursday. This weekly link party is a wonderful way for you to see everyone’s progress. It also provides a great way for us participants to follow along with each other and cheer each other on! I’ll be posting every Thursday for the next 6 weeks until I reveal the finished space November 10th. I’m excited to get started!

One Room Challenge {Week One}

Over the next five weeks I will be working on updating my laundry room. Calling it a room is really a stretch. It’s really a closet. A laundry closet.

Here is where I’m starting.

This is real folks. This is embarrassing.

One Room Challenge Week 1

This is laundry closet in desperate need of a makeover. It’s turned into a dumping ground of sorts. Our home is a small townhouse with limited storage space. Actually there is plenty of storage space. It’s just not being used properly. Plus we have too much stuff. Can anyone relate???

One Room Challenge Week 1

I’d like to make this laundry closet a bright, pretty, functional, and organized space. Dedicated to laundry and cleaning supplies. How am I going to do that?

One Room Challenge Week 1

First I’m going to pull everything out. Every. Thing. And start over. I’d like to add cabinets instead of just shelving. I’d also like to see a pretty color on the walls. And the flooring?

I am thrilled to be partnering with Quick•Step® as my flooring sponsor!

One Room Challenge Week 1

There is not a lot of room in there so I’ll have to get creative with adding decor elements. That will be the fun part!

Here’s my plan:

  1. Take everything out
  2. Clean closet
  3. Clean and repair appliances
  4. Paint walls & ceiling
  5. Paint doors
  6. Install new flooring
  7. Install a cabinet with doors
  8. Maybe add some open shelving?
  9. Maybe add a rod for hangers?
  10. Decorate

I wish I could get new appliances but it’s just not in the budget. The washer/dryer that I have are eight years old. I bought them at Home Depot when I bought this house. They were what I could afford at the time. I was a single mom with a teen-aged daughter. All of my funds went into buying the house so the washer and dryer are not top-of-the-line and while they’re not pretty, they work! The knobs on the dryer have broken off but after some research online, I’m going to fix them myself.

So that’s the plan. I’m so excited to get started. I hope you’ll follow along on this home improvement adventure with me. And if you have any suggestions for the space I’d love to hear them!

I am jealous of your laundry closet! I would kill for laundry on the main floor and not in the kitchen. Can’t wait to see the transformation. Especially the floors!

Yay for you Jeanie! I wish I could participate in this challenge. This is the worst time of year for me because of my big craft show next week.

I look forward to following along to see what you do.

I can totally relate to the laundry room becoming a dumping ground for “stuff”! I have a laundry “hallway” and whenever someone walks through they seem to put something on the shelves that doesn’t even remotely belong! Can’t wait to see it all pretty and organized!

Jeanie’s journey into DIY and home improvement after becoming an empty-nester sounds inspiring! The One Room Challenge is such a fun way to stay motivated while transforming a space, and it’s great to see her passion for woodworking and home decorating come through. Following along with these challenges can offer so many creative ideas and tutorials for those looking to refresh their homes, one room at a time. Can’t wait to see how the gold accents in her project turn out!
