It’s time for another Dollar Store Design Challenge and since it’s almost summer and many of us will be heading to the beach soon (yay!) I gave a dollar store beach bag a fun makeover.

This was a super easy project to do. I used my Cricut and Cricut Stencil Vinyl to make a stencil, but don’t worry, if you don’t have a Cricut or a Silhouette, you can just as easily use pre-made stencils from the craft store to glam up your dollar store beach bag.

Here’s what you’ll need to makeover a dollar store beach bag.

  • a beach bag from the dollar store
  • acrylic paints
  • Sharpie pen
  • brushes
  • stencil(s) (pre-made or make your own with Cricut Stencil Vinyl – here’s a good article about Cricut Stencil Vinyl)
  • cardboard or newspaper to put inside of beach bag during painting

Step 1

Choose or make your stencils.

I made mine using my Cricut Maker and an image from Design Space.

Step 2

Adhere the stencil to bag and paint!

I painted on several coats of the paint to get good coverage. I let each coat dry before applying another.

This design didn’t turn out exactly how I envisioned it so once the design was completely dry, I used a black Sharpie pen to outline the letters and it looks so much better.

I am so ready to grab my flip flops and beach bag and head to the beach!

Now let’s see what my friends have done with their purchases from the dollar store:

How cute Jeanie! Great tip about outlining with Sharpie. A paint pen would also be a great option. I try to keep those on hand in basic colors. 🙂

Pinning your project and shared it on Facebook.
