When I spotted a small chest of drawers at one of my favorite local antique shops, I quickly claimed it for a couple of reasons. The first was the price tag: $18. The second reason was the size. I’ve been on the lookout for small chests of drawers to use as bedside tables. I had raised the bed last summer to get extra storage underneath and now the heights and proportions of the tables that we use as nightstands are way off. They are just way too small. Painting this small chest of drawers is also my project for this month’s Fab Furniture Flippin Contest!

Fab Furniture Flippin Contest

This month’s contest is sponsored by General Finishes and the theme is Fresh Start. General Finishes Chalk Style Paint is a casual chalky interior matte paint available in 20 contemporary colors.

General Finishes Milk Paint French Vanilla

The hosts for this month are Stacy and Evey. If you are a blogger and would like more information about participating in this monthly contest, send an email to info@fabfurnitureflippincontest.com

Quick and easy chest of drawers makeover

Pretty Painted Chest of Drawers

Old chest of drawers to be painted with General Finishes Milk Paint

This small chest of drawers was in really good shape. Very sturdy, just in need of a paint job!

Painting old chest of drawers with General Finishes Milk Paint

I used three coats of General Finishes Milk Paint in French Vanilla. This is the perfect name for this color since it really does look exactly like french vanilla ice cream!

Sanding between coats of milk paint

I sanded lightly between the coats of paint to ensure a smooth finish. I finished with a light coat of clear furniture wax.

Glass knobs accent the drawer fronts of painted small chest of drawers

I replaced the original wooden drawer knobs with these pretty, clear rose knobs from Hobby Lobby.

I love those knobs!

Now I have the perfect sized night stand. I just need to get it carried upstairs.

But in the meantime, I’ll enjoy next to the stenciled chair in the family room for a few days.

And check back on Thursday. I might just add a little something somethin’ somethin’ to this little chest of drawers! Or not. We’ll see . . .

Click here to see what I added to the drawer fronts!

What a great transformation! Too bad I’m not planning to paint an end table that I need to refinish (it will wait for spring so I can work outside). I need to learn more about furniture wax. Is it just for painted items, or does it work on stained items? I’ve always used polyurethane. Oh – and the knobs you used are so elegant. Hobby Lobby has a great selection, don’t they?

    Jeanie,

I love your sweet little chest of drawers. I also love that you don’t call it a dresser. 🙂

The color is perfect, and the size? so wonderful for the taller beds we have these days.

    pinning!

Hi Suzanne, No that’s the nice thing about working with these types of paints – no sanding required! I just cleaned the chest and drawers with a degreaser, then wiped it down with a wet rag to remove any residue from the degreaser.

Ooooh that French Vanilla is nice. I love that you swapped out the drawer handles, it really pulls it all together. Beautiful final piece!

Wow, what a difference! I love the knobs, they add a bit of class.

I have just finished spraying some old rattan drawers which was a very quick and easy project to do but I have 4 pieces of furniture in the living room that all need re-painting properly. I hope they turn out as nice as your chest of drawers!

I really like the dresser. I just did my first chalk painted piece of furniture and it came out well, but you had a real eye to see the potential in the dresser before you painted it. I really like the finished project.
